Tips for avoiding laptop batteries from getting too hot

Many people use their laptops largely as desktop replacements, using them on the desk and leaving them plugged in most of the time. These people would do well not what their laptop batteries charge constantly. Although there’s no danger of “overcharging” lithium-ion batteries, leaving a laptop plugged in for months at a time will have a detrimental effect on its battery. If you use your laptop as a desktop replacement, try unplugging it when it’s not in use. Take care to unplug the charger from the wall, too, as otherwise it consumes electricity. Better yet, leave the laptop plugged in all the time, but remove its battery. For long-term storage, lithium-ion batteries should be allowed to run down to little below half charge. Store them safely in a warm, dry location. Many people believe that low temperatures are harmful for batteries. The truth about Li-ion batteries is that high temperatures are their worst enemy. Therefore, the following tips will help avoid laptop batteries from getting too warm.

1. Always use a laptop on a hard surface.Don’t put it on your lap or on thermal insulating materials such as cushion (DELL Latitude D620 battery).

2. Try to avoid charging the battery while you are working with the laptop. Overheating is the most common problem of laptop battery. Charging the batteries increases your laptop’s temperature. The problem is that the CPU, the graphics card and the hard disk also heat up your laptop, which adds to the temperature increase experienced when charging the battery. While the laptop is using the AC adapter for power the battery acts as a back up in case of a loss of power or accidental unplugging. During this AC power use the battery becomes hotter than it would if being used independently. To lessen the chances of this overheating, which leads to a shorter life expectancy of the battery, keep the AC power adapter plugged in only if you need to charge the battery while using the device. Many vendors deliver their laptops with software that allows you to disable charging. You also can remove the battery while you are working on AC current(Acer Aspire 5320 battery).

3. Make sure the laptop’s ventilation can always work properly. Don’t place objects before the ventilation systems opening. Don’t run or charge the laptop while it is in its case (Apple A1185 Battery).

4. Don’t leave the laptop in the car or under the sun in summer. Use a bike. It keeps your laptop battery cool and your own battery healthy. And too much sun exposure causes only skin cancer anyway (Dell Latitude D820 Battery).

Let the battery warm up a little before you put it back into your laptop. If the temperature is raised too fast, it will strain the battery.

When I started this article, I thought I’d just share a few tips I’ve found on the web. But then I realized that there are quite a few things that can be done wrong with laptop batteries. That’s how I ended up with three articles. It is quite amazing that we can build space ships that have enough energy to fly to the moon but still have no decent portable energy sources for simple laptops. Perhaps fuel cells will change the picture in a few years.
